The same agent was suddenly pressing her against the side of the building talking tersely over his headset. Like a puppet with the strings cut, she went down fast. Like an idiot, she turned around to see if she could tell where it came from, stumbling sideways as Paulette bumped her, falling to the concrete. A backfire snapped her head to the right, breaking the hold. Slow speed received a kick in the ass and suddenly events swarmed too fast around her to catalogue. Once touched by him, her heart started beating irregularly. She lived in his eyes, breathed with his lungs, thought his thoughts until a sharp report severed the connection. The heart won, but by that time, he was inside her, around her, through her.
Rhayne paused in step while her heart held a short argument with her head, refusing to continue beating, let alone keep a steady rhythm. Heat smacked them in the face like a bundle of heavy cotton, boiled, but it was nothing to the instant wash of chaotic clamor when her eyes met his. He reached to remove his glasses, allowing his eyes to adjust from the bright sun to the diffused light of the lobby. The automatic door parted, bathing their faces with the cool rush of air conditioning. She dreaded getting into her car, glinting in the parking lot under the sun.Īnother team of four headed into the hotel as Rhayne and Paulette stepped single file, facing them on their way out. Savannah, Georgia in the summer would melt tar. "But it could have been done over the phone in fifteen minutes, right?" Rhayne pulled her sunglasses out.
"It wasn't as bad as you said it would be." Rhayne laughed at her partner, Paulette was her backup and stress relief in their job. And I don't want to be in this town when he does land. While moving with purpose, the secret service coming and going didn't have an edge of tension riding them. "You think the President is already here?" Rhayne's eyes roamed the lobby as they crossed to the door. Any resemblance to living persons or events is merely coincidence.
